What Constitutes a "Legitimate" Application?
We have just published the results of two surveys that we conducted with messaging decision makers on the topic of email, instant messaging and Web security. We asked respondents to tell us if they thought each of a series of applications was legitimate in the context of business, or if it was not legitimate.
We found that only 25% of decision-makers thought that Skype was a legitimate tool for use in a business setting, while 41% thought that consumer IM was a legitimate business tool.
Why the difference? Since Skype is to business VoIP what consumer IM is to business IM, perhaps the perceived greater legitimacy of consumer IM is due to the fact that it is more widely used or it simply has been used for a longer period in business environments.
